The Yorkshire branch held its inaugural meeting on 26 March 1979. It has
flourished continuously since then, using the same venue - The Willows Community
Centre at Horsforth near Leeds - until the start of the 1998/99 season when circumstances forced
a move to the current venue, the nearby St. James' Parish Centre in Horsforth. Note that
following a fire at the Centre, this season's meetings will take place elsewhere - see
below for details.
The branch is not an academic body but a friendly group of people united in
a love of music, mainly, but not exclusively, Elgar's. The branch has the use
of first class equipment and music is played at all meetings. Visiting speakers
inform us on widely ranging aspects of Elgar's life and works. The branch meets
every month except August, with an average attendance of about 30 members.
The branch is very conscious of Elgar's own Yorkshire connection - his
friendship with Yorkshire doctor Charles Buck of Settle, in the Pennines.
Dennis Clark, the branch Chairman, has undertaken considerable research on
this subject and has lectured widely on it over the past 20 years.
